Kitchen Island Size

However, you should balance the island's size against the open floor area, which is also important. If people can't move freely around the kitchen and struggle to find space to open cupboards, that will work against the functionality of the kitchen. Countertop Space

Zoning the Kitchen

In a kitchen, some people may cook while others chat and socialise, and you can use the island to accommodate these diverse activities. Its placement can help create a flow so that people socialising don't get in the way of those who are cooking. You can put seating on one side of the island and the stove and sink on the wall behind the other side of the island. That way, it separates the working and entertainment area and avoids making the kitchen unnecessarily congested. If the kitchen has a walk-through zone, don't place the cooktop there, as it can create more congestion.

Functional Storage

Plan where you want to store specific things to improve functionality during kitchen renovations. For example, you will need a drawer for pots and pans near the stovetop. If you cook with spices, you could insert a narrow pull-out wire basket to hold herbs, spices and cooking oils. Don't forget to install a cupboard to hold a rubbish bin so you can keep it out of sight and it won't ruin the design.
