Using Glass During a Bathroom Renovation

A bathroom is full of various hard materials that can withstand exposure to splashing water. These surfaces not only need to be functional — they also need to enhance the decor and help create a luxurious space. One such indispensable substance is glass, which is used in three essential components.

Shower

The shower enclosure is one of the largest elements in a bathroom. An advantage of using glass is that it makes this structure less cumbersome and intrusive. Being see-through, glass screens give bathrooms a light and airy feel. You'll preserve this effect the most by installing frameless panels. While glass gives the impression of airiness, extended metal areas can create a bulky aesthetic that breaks up the openness.

Mirror

Of course, a bathroom requires a mirror so that you can groom yourself. You could install an anti-fogging mirror with LED lights to remain functional and provide clear vision at all times. The mirror is also a design element, and you can use its frame style and size to enhance the room. For example, in a chic country style bathroom, install an ornately framed mirror and pair it with a chandelier light fixture. Alternatively, in a modern space, fit a bevelled-edge mirror for a seamless look. Mirrors also make a bathroom seem larger. So if your room is small, consider installing an expansive mirror that spreads across the wall to seemingly double the area proportions.

Windows

Because bathrooms require privacy, windows are often small. However, you could enlarge the window during bathroom renovations and fit the frame with obscure glass. One possibility is frosted glass which mimics the cloudiness that covers a windowpane on a chilly morning. Another attractive option is patterned glass that's moulded with 3D textures. To add colour and tinted light rays, you could install a colourful leadlight window. Choose a geometric design or a botanical theme using red, green, gold and blue glass pieces connected by led piping.

Alternatively, you could construct a large window that looks out onto a private garden area. Such an outdoor view creates a link with nature and makes the bathroom feel bigger, as you can see further. If you don't want to knock out part of the wall to expand a window, you could install a skylight window instead. You won't have to fit obscure glass but can instead enjoy a galactic panorama. If you live in a congested urban region, this may be the perfect solution.
